Immersive theatre company Punchdrunk Enrichment has launched the first stage of its development as a new arts venue, working with its Young Makers to transform the space into an immersive theatre space for the local area.

A cohort of 10 young people aged between 18 and 25 from the Brent area took part. The group were made up of individuals who are interested in becoming scenic artists, carpenters, prop makers and set designers.

Prior to getting involved, the Young Makers had not been in education, employment or training, and the opportunity helped them develop new skills, greater confidence and understand more about working in the arts.

Earlier this year, Punchdrunk Enrichment moved to Wembley Park as part of a three-year residency to deliver the first ever co-created immersive arts space.

This project will support local artist development and deliver exceptional theatre experiences for families and the community, as well as provide training opportunities for Brent-based young people.

‘It was very important that we began the first stage of our journey in Brent alongside a group of young people from the local area,’ said Peter Higgin, CEO and artistic director of Punchdrunk Enrichment.

‘It’s vital that arts organisations offer quality opportunities as a means to getting into the theatre industry. The Brent Young Makers have impressed us not only with their talent but also their drive to succeed as a group and their desire to use this opportunity to open a door to a career in the arts. We wish them every success.’

Micah C. Powell, 23, who trained in carpentry said: ‘I’d previously had no experience in carpentry, but learning the skills needed also increased my courage and the confidence to pursue a career in the arts.’

More will be announced by Punchdrink Enrichment on this in the new year.
